Hosting a Halloween Party? Do the Monster Mash!

Can’t think of a cool theme for your Halloween party? The best thing to do that is organize a party that will heavily draw on the most popular Halloween icons: the monsters. A monster mash party not only will stir people’s imagination, but it will also blend perfectly with the traditional Halloween meaning. In addition to that, it is a flexible theme that enables the organizers to put in practice their craziest ideas! Everything can become real when planning a monster mash party.

In fact, there are several directions in which the organizers can go when planning such a party. The first (and probably the most obvious one) is the scary party, with skeletons hanging from the walls, skulls decorating the tables and countertops, red drinks imitating blood and creepy costumed party-people attending the debauchery.

Another direction in which one can go with the monster mash party is the masquerade. Ask people to double dress in order to create the image of monsters having a costumed party. It would be nice to see Count Dracula trying to be Frankenstein and wolf men fitting in a zombie or Igor costume. It will create a grotesque and playful atmosphere that will entertain all the guests.

The last suggestion for the monster mash party is a classy dinner party where the monsters will dress elegantly to attend a formal party. This is an original twist to the traditional monster mash party which will bring something new in the old monster themed party.

Whatever type of monster party you choose to go for, there are some things which need to be taken care of, such as invitations, decorations, activities and party favors. Below you will find some ideas regarding each one of these topics which will help you plan your monster mash party easier.

Invitations

Because this party is all about monsters, you will want an invitation which thoroughly matches the theme. Thus, you can either purchase some monster invitations from the internet or party planners, as there are plenty models available for this type of party or you can do them yourself.

If the latter option is your choice, then look for stock pictures with haunted houses or castles or choose your favorite monster picture and print the image on a piece of paper along with the details about the time and place of the party. Use some red liquid (water mixed with colorant, red wine or even red nail polish) to create some bloody spots on the paper for a creepier look.

Decorations

According to the type of monster mash party you want to organize, you will need to decorate the house accordingly. Yet, there are some items which should not miss from your décor, such as tombstones, skeletons, spider cobs, ghosts and lot of blood (fake, of course).

Because Frankenstein’s monster will be around, you can also decorate one room as a chemistry lab with colorful substances bubbling in glasses and tubes. Place a coffin somewhere in the party area, so that Dracula and his vampires will have a place to rest. It is also recommendable to find out what your friends are going to wear for the party so that you include a specific item for them in your decoration. This will make them feel important and will certainly save you from their furry.

Activities

Monsters are easy to please, but you can at least try to keep them occupied and avoid disaster. Try one or more of these activities to keep them in good mood and have a successful party.

Mummy disguise – divide the guests into groups of two or three people, give them rolls of toilet paper and ask them to wrap one of the members of the group in toilet paper. The team which covers their mummy completely in paper wins.

Who am I? – cover all mirrors from the house as well as all items in which the image can be reflected and then pin an image onto each guest’s back without them seeing it. Then ask each guest to find out who he/she is by asking questions about the image on the back. The question “Who am I?” or any derivate is prohibited.

Monster Words – choose the name of a monster (e.g. Frankenstein, Dracula, Werewolf, Vampire) and ask people to derive words using only the letters from the monster’s name. the guest coming up with the highest number of words wins.

Creating Frankenstein’s monster – hide numerous parts of Frankenstein’s monster’s body, divide the guests in two teams and ask them to look for the body parts and assemble them to look like the monster. Make sure that you have duplicate items of all body parts (two skulls, four hands, four legs and so on), so that each team has the chance to create the monster.

Party favors

Candies, gummy worms and vampire teeth and monster party treat bags can be offered as party treats.

There are numerous monsters in popular culture. Why not explore people’s inclination for dark parties and celebrate Halloween in a gloomy, yet fun manner? The monster mash parties offer you lots of possibilities to play with a traditional theme and make it new and fun each time! You can be sure yours will be the hottest party in the neighborhood this year!

Frankenstein’s monster is one of the original icons of horror. What started as the product of a nineteen years old girl’s imagination is now one of the most popular monsters that have ever been created. The story of Frankenstein and his hideous creation started in 1818, when Mary Shelly published Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. The novel’s first edition was published anonymously in London, due to the reticence people had in reading novels written by female authors. The second edition was signed and published in France. It has never been out of print.

Frankenstein is the story of an ingenious student in science who seeks refuge from his worldly problems in the creation of a human-like being out of inanimate items. Using bones collected from charnels Victor Frankenstein created the monster’s skeleton, while for the complete creation of the human-like creature, Frankenstein made use of his extensive knowledge of chemistry and alchemy, hoping to design a beautiful being that will serve him as friend and fellow. Instead, a hideous monster was brought to life! At the sight of his final work Frankenstein fled from the creature, hoping to put an end to his experiment and never hear from his ugly creation ever again. Yet, his wish will not be fulfilled, as the monster, banned from the human community, seeks revenge on his creator.

Although the Gothic Romantic book was a success at its time, it was Boris Karloff’s portrayal in the movie called first sequel of Frankenstein, released in 1931. Frankenstein in 1931 that everybody knows. Unlike the original description, which pictured Frankenstein’s creation as an 8 feet tall monster with yellow translucent, prominent eyes, black lips, flowing hair and a flexible body which can run faster than a human being, the Frankenstein’s monster revealed by Karloff in 1931 was a heavy creature which had difficulties in walking both due to its stiffness and its large boots; he has a square face with short hair and visible sewing traces. Two electrodes protrude from his neck and his coat and pants are too small for his large body.

The 2004 Frankenstein movie offers a more modern vision upon the monster, which now has bald head and pale blue skin. He is powered by electricity by means of two electrified crystals positioned one on his head and another one above the heart.

Frankenstein Halloween Costumes

Due to the enormous success the book and the movie had along time, Frankenstein’s monster has become one of the most famous horror disguise for Halloween and horror themed parties. Numerous costumes have been released for fans to dress up like the hideous creature for different themed parties. Tattered costumes and Frankenstein foam, rubber or plastic masks are available for those looking for an accurate monster look. There are also accessories like high boots to create the height illusion and special make-up kits to recreate a Frankenstein look without wearing a mask.

Yet, the appropriate costume and make-up are not the only things one needs in order to fully look like Frankenstein. His stiff look, the crude gait and his difficulty in articulating words are key features which must be practiced by the monster-to-be.

As mentioned previously, there are some contradictions between the features presented in the book and the ones promoted by the film industry. Because most of the Frankenstein costumes available stick rather to the cinematographic image of Frankenstein’s monster, it is recommend to go on this track to create your perfect monster look. This way, your costume will no only be recognized by everybody, but it will also be praised for the details it displays.

Well, just make your own costume with minimum investment! Here is how you can do that. First of all decide on the type of Bride you are going to be. If you go for the traditional look, then measure your height and purchase twice as many yards of white felt. Then fold the felt in two and cut a hole in the middle in the position where your head will go. Then, measure the place where your arms will be and mark it. Fold the shoulders two or three times until you obtain that draped look, then pin and sew them. Sew the laterals of the dress, leaving holes for your arms, and your Bride of Frankenstein dress is done! Wear it with a white turtleneck for a more accurate look.

If you are not comfortable with going through all this you can go to a thrift shop and purchase an old wedding gown. Then, using a pair of scissors, tatter it so that it looks worn out. You can also pain some tatters in grey and black, for a gloomier look. For sexy looks you can use a white mini dress or a white top with white mini skirt.

In order to do your beehive hair you will need a curly black wig (you can find it in the thrift shops, too) and a paper or Styrofoam cone. Place the cone in the middle of the wig, then attach the hair to it using pins or glue, until all hair strands are oriented upwards, then paint two strands of hair using white dye. Then place a wig cap on your head and put the wig in place.

No matter if you choose to purchase your costume or make it yourself, make sure you complete it with the appropriate facial and body make-up, some white stockings and a pair of black, comfortable shoes, so that you can dance all night long. Combine this costume with the Frankenstein outfit for a great couple costume!

This is the plot of the first sequel of Frankenstein, released in 1931. Bride of Frankenstein was not only one of the best sequels of an original movie, but it was also a highly praised film, acquiring many positive reviews, in spite of its rather difficult genre for that period (horror).

The bride of Frankenstein has become an icon in the horror industry, being one of the most popular horror female disguises for Halloween and scary themed parties. Just the hair with the electric streak of white is known throughout the world. Numerous fun and creative outfits are available for that sexy, yet creepy look for Halloween.

Along with the traditional, tunic-like dress which the Bride wore in the movie, numerous other styles of the Bride of Frankenstein costumes have been released on the market. Sexy Bride featuring short skirts and provocative tops, horrific Bride coming from the dead with black and white, tattered dress and elegant Frankenstein with a tight dress are some options for shoppers looking for a cool look this Halloween.

Don’t forget the cool wig! This iconic beehive headpiece is usually not included with the costume.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is a masterful motion picture. While it does take a few liberties with Shelley’s classic novel, it does a wonderful job of capturing the essence of the original story, specifically the humanity of the creature. While a little over-the-top at times and surprisingly gory, this film forcefully echoes Shelley’s philosophical, moral, and ethical questions, and by so doing redefines the creature in its original image.

Click Here to See More Costumes

What I have always found to be the most crucial scenes in the story are here displayed in all of their troubling glory, and perhaps it is the heightened intellectual nature of this film that explains why a surprisingly large number of people find disappointment where I find stimulating triumph.

There are enough horror-laden scenes to capture the attention of the general horror lover, but the real substance of this story, for those who prefer their monster to serve as a complicated, amoral representation of man himself, are ambrosia for those who are more fascinated by the questions Frankenstein raises than by the horrors he unleashes.

It is with the entrance of the monster, however, that this film truly begins to shine. Mary Shelley’s monster is not evil, nor is he a monster in the stereotypical sense by which he has come to be viewed by modern audiences. He is most definitely a victim and a creature deserving of much sympathy.

Abandoned by his creator, his first interaction with mankind finds him fleeing mob intent on hurting him for no reason apart from his ugliness. He takes shelter in a pigsty adjoined to a simple house in the country, and through a crack in the wall he not only learns to read and write, he gets to experience vicariously the joys and travails of family life. He becomes a guardian angel of sorts, secretly helping the family survive and prosper.

The rest of the film is handled quite well, and Helena Bonham Carter is simply wonderful in her role as Victor’s significant other. The ending goes beyond the scope of the original novel, and it does so in a strikingly grisly way, but the overall effect of this film is true to Shelley’s original vision.

Robert De Niro gives a particularly compelling performance as Frankenstein’s monster, the look and feel of the late eighteenth-century setting is spot on, and the musical soundtrack complements the plot extraordinarily well. While I would prefer to see a movie strictly faithful to Shelley’s novel, this exemplary albeit somewhat effusive adaptation hits the core messages of the story dead on and stands, in my opinion, as a truly impressive cinematic accomplishment.

I am one of the legions of admirers who believe that this film represents the apex of both James Whale’s directorial career and Universal Studios’ first cycle of monster movies. Cleverly scripted, flawlessly acted, wittily directed, and hauntingly scored, it’s a marvel of a movie on many levels; it works as a horror film, a satire, a black comedy, a social commentary even as a romantic melodrama depending on your individual interpretation.

Click Here to See More Costumes

It’s a real pity, then, that this rich cinematic treasure has received such a disappointing transfer to the DVD format. After experiencing the sharply focused, pristine prints presented on Universal’s DVD releases of “Frankenstein” and “The Mummy”, my expectations for “Bride” was enthusiastically high. What a letdown! The film is grainy, with distractingly poor contrast — the actors appear to have microprobes running across their faces, like amoeba that you might observe under a microscope. And there were a couple of pops and jumps inherent in the source material that I don’t recall having seen on the VHS tape release of this film.

The extras are the only features that keep this disc from being a complete fiasco. The poster and still archive is remarkable, and the “making of” featurette is informative and enjoyable. The theatrical trailer is the one used for the film’s Realart re-release and not the Universal original. I strongly suspect (and hope) there will some day be a “restored” edition of this movie available. Unless you just can’t wait to add this title to your DVD collection, I have to regretfully advise that until such an improved version comes along, you spend your hard-earned pennies on an alternate selection.

As mentioned by many others, the film, commentary, documentary etc are all excellent. No need to repeat. But a major flaw in the film transfer itself is the amount of information removed at the top. The tops of heads are chopped and the glowing crudifix at the climax of the blind hermit scene is cropped so much you cannot tell it is a cross. I have compared the laser and vhs copies of this film to the dvd. The laser and vhs crop information from the bottom, a FAR better choice.

I consider the cropping on the dvd so bad as to make the film almost unwatchable. I’ll be keeping my laserdisc and videotape.

Just as Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein are the most complex and impressive of all the classic Universal monster movies, Frankenstein The Legacy Collection is the most impressive of the three Legacy Collection DVD sets. Not only do you get five classic Frankenstein’s monster films, you also are treated to more numerous and significant extra features here than in the Dracula and Wolf Man Legacy Collection releases.

Click Here to See More Costumes

It is difficult to compare and contrast the different Universal monsters; my personal predilection draws me to Dracula, but I daresay Frankenstein’s monster is the most successful, memorable, and influential of the Dracula – Frankenstein’s monster -Wolf Man triad. The first two Frankenstein films are nothing short of brilliant (although I still regret that they did not truly recreate the monster of Mary Shelley’s imaginative vision), with the sequel, Bride of Frankenstein, actually going one better than the original.

When you think of Universal’s Dracula, you think of Bela Lugosi; when you think of The Wolf Man, you think of Lon Chaney, Jr. When you think of Frankenstein, however, you think of Boris Karloff as the monster, Colin Clive as Dr. Frankenstein, Elsa Lanchester as the Bride of Frankenstein, James Whale as the ingenious director, Jack Pierce as the legendary horror make-up artist, etc.

Virtually every last detail of the first two Frankenstein films is perfect, unforgettable, and remarkably complex – the vision, the style of presentation, the iconic performances, the make-up, the special effects, everything. Not even Dracula is as memorable in half as many ways as both Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein are.

House of Frankenstein boasts all three of the Universal monster heavyweights: Frankenstein’s monster (now played by Glenn Strange), the Wolf Man (Lon Chaney, Jr.), and Count Dracula (played by John Carradine – the world’s worst Dracula). It also features Boris Karloff in the role of the mad scientist who causes all sorts of trouble. A sequel of sorts to Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, House of Frankenstein is a major disappointment in my eyes; only the Wolf Man character gets a decent treatment in this fun but rather insignificant film.

The extras in this collection are wonderful. For starters, you get theatrical trailers for all the films except Son of Frankenstein, poster and photo galleries for Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, and a discussion by Van Helsing director Stephen Sommers of the pervading influence of Universal’s Frankenstein’s monster in the horror movie industry. Frankenstein comes with a commentary by film historian Rudy Behlmer, while Bride of Frankenstein features commentary by film historian Scott MacQueen (one of the best commentaries I’ve heard).

This collection is not perfect (beware in particular a dangerous little bump in the casing beneath each DVD, as each one is just dying for the chance to scratch a disc). Still, considering how much material is included here, the Frankenstein Legacy Collection DVD set is a bargain that all Frankenstein fans would do well to snatch up. Of course, if you are interested in Dracula and the Wolf Man as well as Frankenstein’s monster, look into getting the all-inclusive Monster Legacy Collection.

The 19th century reader of the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley was treated to a tale of fantastic proportions. A story of a monster that was created from parts of corpses and could be brought to life would have been an extremely scary story. They would not know if the creation of a monster in this way was really a scientific possibility.

Click Here to See More Costumes

The 21st century audience however, now knows that this is not scientifically possible. The fear that was struck in the hearts of the 19th century reader by this monster is now gone. With this in mind the story of Frankenstein now has to be altered to conjure the same fear in our current society of that which existed in the hearts of the original audience.

In Hollywood’s remakes of the original novel the monster is not the same monster as was in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Hollywood has used aesthetics, science and dehumanization of the monster to turn the story of Frankenstein into movies that would reflect our current society. This essay will strive to draw connections from the original text, empirical research and Hollywood’s modern day film remakes of Frankenstein to demonstrate how the monster has been changed and turned into a monster that our society can understand.

While the creature appeared on film as early as 1910 in an Edison short, most of the conventions of future Frankenstein films would be established by James Whale in the first feature adaptation of Shelley’s novel. Frankenstein (1931) introduced conventions only hinted at in the original work or not present at all. First, the physical terrain of Frankenstein’s laboratory is visualized concretely by Whale.

Frankenstein’s method of reanimation is also made specific as he becomes a master surgeon who stitches dead bodies together and then electrifies them, using lightning as his source, recalling the Promethean allusion of the original. Whale also created the look of the creature. Mary Shelley chose to rely on the reader’s imagination and the other characters’ terrified reactions to the monster to carry the effect.
